Is Acupuncture safe?
Yes, when practiced by a properly trained and licensed practitioner. In Massachusetts, licensed acupuncturists have completed a four-year graduate program with over 3,000 hours of clinical training and passed multiple board certification examinations. All needles used at VIBE are sterile, single-use, and FDA-approved medical devices. There is no risk of disease transmission.
Does it hurt?
Most people are surprised by how comfortable acupuncture is. The needles are about the width of a human hair, dramatically finer than the needles used for blood draws or injections. Most patients feel little to nothing upon insertion. The most common sensations are a brief heaviness, warmth, or tingling at the needle site, which typically fades within seconds. The majority of patients fall deeply relaxed within minutes, and many fall asleep on the table.
What happens at my first appointment?
Your first visit is about 60 minutes. We start with a thorough health intake. Well have a real conversation about your health history, current symptoms, lifestyle, and goals. We'll also look at your tongue and feel your pulse, which give us additional diagnostic information in the Chinese medicine framework. From there, we build a treatment plan specific to you, and your first acupuncture treatment happens in the same visit. You'll leave with a clear understanding of what we're working on and what to expect going forward.
How many treatments will I need?
It depends on the condition, how long you've had it, and how your body responds. Most patients notice something meaningful within the first 1-3 treatments. Most conditions respond significantly within 4-8 treatments. Chronic or complex conditions may take longer. We reassess regularly and always give you an honest picture of where things stand and what to expect.
How often should I come in?
For most conditions we recommend starting with weekly or twice-weekly treatments to build momentum. As you improve, we typically space out to every other week and then monthly for maintenance. Fertility patients and those in active IVF cycles often come more frequently around specific cycle phases. We'll build a schedule that fits your protocol.
Do you take insurance?
We are in network with Blue Cross, Aetna, and Allways/MGB. Acupuncture is covered by many insurance plans, though coverage varies widely. We recommend calling the member services number on the back of your insurance card and asking specifically about acupuncture coverage, your deductible, and whether you need a referral. We are happy to provide superbills for out-of-network reimbursement. Please contact us if you have questions.
What should I do before my appointment?
Come having eaten something within a few hours. Not a full meal, but not on an empty stomach either. Wear or bring comfortable, loose clothing that allows easy access to your arms and legs. Avoid caffeine immediately before your appointment if possible. And arrive a few minutes early for your first visit to complete intake paperwork if you haven’t done so in advance.
Can I combine acupuncture with existing medical care
Absolutely! We encourage it. Acupuncture works well alongside conventional medicine and we regularly coordinate with OBGYNs, reproductive endocrinologists, and other providers. Let us know what other care you're receiving and we'll build a plan that complements it. We never ask you to choose.
Do you see children
Yes! We offer pediatric acupuncture and acupressure for children of all ages. Treatments for younger children typically involve no needles at all, relying instead on gentle massage and acupressure. [Learn more about pediatric care here]
Do you offer herbal medicine
Yes! Herbal medicine is often prescribed alongside acupuncture for a more comprehensive treatment effect. [Learn more about herbal medicine here]
